Unity Arts Collective, an interdisciplinary theatre, is a residence theatre company at the University of Kent.
Our Mission
We create innovative and experimental theatre that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, fostering a collaborative environment where diverse artistic disciplines converge. Through devised ensemble productions, workshops, and community outreach, we aim to enrich the cultural landscape and make theatre accessible to all.
Surya Dev Chandra
Founder and Artistic Director
Surya Chandra is an interdisciplinary theatre artist based in the UK, originally from Kolkata, India. He explores disciplines of movement, imagery, sounds, visual arts, science, technology and architecture and combines them to break the language barrier in theatre.
He holds an MA in Physical Acting from the University of Kent. His background in science with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and experience as a software developer, alongside a hobby in aeromodelling, he has always been curious about exploring how medical science AI, and robotics can intersect with the arts, especially in movement-based work.
In his artistic process, Surya often experiments with the collected data of images, movements, sounds, and texts to develop works that reflect socio-political narratives from around the world, exploring themes of displacement, migration, identity, and human resilience.
Surya is trained in Hindustan classical music, Rabindrasangeet and percussion(Tabla, Djembe).
